Hello everyone. I recently set up my brother's new PC and had to run Windows 10. We both didn’t like it. Right away, I turned off Windows Update. Then I installed the language pack in French but he always preferred English. When I tried to install the language pack, it kept failing. Apparently, it needed a working Windows Update. So I turned it back on just for that purpose. After installing, I disabled the service again. But then he got a message saying "Something happened, and we couldn't install a feature." I shared a screenshot of that moment. I’ve been using Windows 7 since its release, so I’m not sure how to fix this without re-enabling Windows Update. Thanks for your help!

It's frustrating because everyone dislikes it, and complaining about a broken system doesn't solve anything... perhaps that's why you feel this way?

I dislike this for valid reasons, and one of the main reasons I turned off Windows Update was because Microsoft often mishandles updates. To avoid that hassle, I disabled it for my own convenience. Now, focusing on the matter—can you find a solution to resolve this problem?

You might have turned off the update feature too quickly. Certain functions require a restart, and disabling something immediately after installing a language pack can stop your system from finishing. Also, just shutting down the Windows Update service isn't enough—other settings might be affected. In short, you likely disabled more than just the update service.

Various (alternative) versions of Windows 10 use distinct approaches. Now a correctly set group policy (gpedit.msc) is sufficient. If not, ensure certain services or tasks within the task scheduler are activated. You can search online, but focus on recommendations that avoid disabling Windows Update or BITS service only—Windows can enable them as needed. Make sure you see "*Your organization has turned off automatic updates" in the control panel if you disable updates properly.

Yes, it can be useful to know the operating system your brother is using.

You can use gpedit.msc for management tasks.
