for any reason whenever i turn on my laptop, windows just displays a black screen with only the cursor. i can't enter safe mode and the only option is to keep pressing shift for the sticky keys. before this issue began, my computer would also behave strangely—like it didn’t recognize a WiFi adapter, so i had to restart. my machine’s specs are: msi gp60, cpu i-7, gt740m, 4gb ram.

Do you have a login password? What occurs when you enter your password while the screen is dark? I encounter this problem occasionally but if I pause for a moment the window appears and I’m back on my desktop. That’s uncertain. How many programs do you have when the system starts? If your setup loads many files into memory at startup because of too many applications, it could lead to strange issues like not being able to reach the desktop. Safe mode would help here but you mentioned you can’t access it. I believe pressing F10 during boot might take you to the advanced startup screen where you should be able to enter safe mode. EDIT: F11 opens recovery mode for situations when you can’t get to the login screen/desktop.
