I just set up Windows 10 about five hours ago. I booted it up and checked my new drive, but it was half full—same amount as before the clean install. When I opened it, everything from the last installation remained intact. I chose to run a recovery and reinstall. After waiting a while, it finished successfully. However, something unusual happened: around 300GB of space is now occupied, which is less than before, yet there are no files present. Windows 10 should only use about 20GB on my system. Can anyone assist or suggest a solution?

Space might be filled with old windows. Check WinDirStat to find out what’s consuming the most space. Also, try using CCleaner.

It’s okay to remove windows.old, but make sure you do it properly for your system.

You don't need anything from there.

Windows.old appears with a small size, while the main folder is much larger. I also require the "SYSTEM" access to modify it.

Currently, Windows 10 isn't handling SSDs correctly, and the available free space isn't displaying accurately. After deleting files, the drive still appears fully occupied.

The issue might stem from the lack of an SSD, as a full hard drive can affect performance and reliability.
