Usually just updating works. Occasionally updates cause issues, though this isn't common and might require a complete reinstall. Such situations are rare.

A new installation isn't necessarily better unless your current setup has nothing worth updating. Reapplying all your programs is time-consuming and offers no advantages.

A new installation is definitely preferable, though it requires more time. If you prepare in advance, back up your files and save driver updates on a flash drive, it can become a swift procedure. The outcome is a highly optimized system with no leftover remnants. I'm not suggesting avoid upgrades altogether; just sharing this long-standing opinion. Upgrades have significantly improved, and if your setup isn't experiencing any problems, the transition should be seamless. Regardless, always ensure your data is protected. This way, should the upgrade encounter an issue, you can easily start over with a fresh install.
