I'm sorry for suggesting it, but I've just heard about this before. I wasn't really aware it might be close to the law.

For students in high school or university, you might qualify for it through your institution. Alternatively, you can try using a Windows version that isn't fully activated but has restrictions.

It's understandable to feel surprised. I only learned about this after a challenging experience around three to four years ago.
