Will using a 1440P display require DLSS?
I’ve just finished setting up my new rig and haven’t tried any of the latest games with ray tracing or DLSS. I’m considering Control or Cyberpunk 2077, likely going for Control unless Cyberpunk drops in price. I’ve been reading about DLSS and it looks like running ray tracing without it would be best if my system can handle solid FPS. My rig is a 27-inch display with 1440P resolution, 1ms latency, 165Hz refresh rate, and Gsync. I’m reaching out to others with a similar build to see if my setup can support ray tracing without DLSS. I’m aiming for around 60 FPS or better.
You can achieve this, but it provides the highest effect on your FPS. I aim to locate a review demonstrating that the newest DLSS version might offer a clearer picture compared to none at all.
This would definitely be an interesting read. My worry was that image quality could drop with DLSS compared to the original. It seems that if the image has to be rendered at a lower resolution and then upscaled, some detail might be lost. But I’m unfamiliar with DLSS beyond what I’ve been hearing today. If using DLSS actually improves the image, it would make sense to enable it. Regarding ray tracing, I think I’ll give it a try and see the results since my 3080 supports it. Likely the best choice is to use the DLSS setting that preserves the most quality, rather than focusing on the highest FPS.
DLSS performs very well now. Today, it goes beyond simply adding pixels to make images look blocky, as older methods did; we now have sufficient computing power to perform many unusual tasks using machine learning. Applying it to games is far simpler than dealing with deepfake content because developers can tailor the upscaled elements, something not possible in filmmaking from the 19th century.
I found it—it's actually a video.
My memory isn't great, but I'll jump to the 11:30 mark.

I decided to purchase Cyberpunk 2077 because it was on sale during Thanksgiving. I've set all the options to ultra, ray tracing at ultra, and DLSS at quality. My FPS is consistently in the 70s, with the lowest being around 60 and the highest reaching the 80s.
It varies based on the setup and the game, but sometimes DLSS gives a better appearance than the standard resolution it generates. Still, DLSS 2.x is a temporary fix and can cause issues in some situations. For instance, in Back 4 Blood, you might notice a ghosting effect on overhead wires that isn't immediately obvious.
