I am setting up a gaming system because it’s time to improve. I’ve already planned a 9800x3d setup and have a 38" ultra-wide monitor with g-sync and freesync. I’m currently running an RTX 3080 and using DLSS to maintain performance or reduce settings. During benchmark tests for 1440p UW gaming, I noticed the 9070 XT was performing well, but now I realize my resolution is actually 3840x1600—probably between 4K and 1440p.
I’m torn about whether to buy the 9070 XT Red Devil, which costs around 950 euros locally, or wait a bit and opt for an RTX 5080 priced at 1450 euros. I was committed to AMD because I saw the gains in 1440p weren’t worth the big price jump, but now with my current resolution I’m questioning it. Spending so much on the 5080 feels odd, and I was hoping I could play comfortably with the 9070 XT for 2-3 years before upgrading again. But I’m still unsure if my resolution leans more toward 1440p or 4K and how that impacts frame rates.
I play a variety of games—from AAA titles to multiplayer—and it really matters. I just wish, after all this investment, I could launch most games, enable ultra settings, and go without RT if possible. If games support RT and offer good performance, that would be ideal. Even better, if not, I think I can live without RT unless more titles start requiring it.

If a game supports RT and performs well, that’s even better. Otherwise, I think I can manage without it (unless more titles start requiring it...).
What games are we discussing? If the games you play benefit from Nvidia’s features, then Nvidia is the logical choice. Otherwise, you’re clearly targeting a different audience (and not Intel discrete GPUs).

I'm mainly concerned that if I choose games like Alan Wake 2 or Silent Hill 2, I might not hit 60 fps due to resolution limits, which could affect my gaming experience. I don't mind aiming for 120fps in games, but 60-90 fps would be ideal, especially in more demanding titles where stability is important.

No one can predict how a game will perform on your setup. There are too many factors at play, from operating system health and cleanliness, to cooling systems, power delivery, and even overclocking (some motherboards handle it automatically).
This setup will be a tidy installation on Windows. The components include an x870 Tomahawk, 9800X3D, Arctic Liquid Freezer III, and 64gb RAM CL30. However, I'm not entirely confident about its significance. My belief was that the GPU would be the primary factor.
Near-4K resolution makes the GPU the main concern for AAA games when graphics are maximized. Still, certain titles can also demand significant CPU power.
