Will the Corsair hx520w suffice?
Will the Corsair hx520w suffice?
Hi everyone
For this rig, a Corsair hx520w should suffice?
CPU: Ryzen 5900x
Memory: Asus b550e
GPU: Asus 760gtx direct cuii
RAM: 4 modules – 2x4GB and 2x16GB
5 SATA drives (1SSD, 3HDD, 1DVD writer)
2 CPU fans and 1 chassis fan
Thanks
Considering how long the PSU has been around makes me doubt it. Being discontinued around 2008 means it's at least 17 years old.
Good quality once was, but now it's less important. Components in power supplies like capacitors tend to lose reliability and efficiency over time, which can affect the quality and capacity of power output. Will it work? Perhaps because the GPU is also quite old. It's not recommended or reliable. In certain markets, you might find a unit that can consistently power your system affordably due to its low power consumption.
You have a nice collection of components, why settle for a low-quality PS? It’s too harsh...
Not at all, in any form or manner.
The HX520 relies on the Seasonic S12II platform and is a group-regulated power supply unit. Released in 2006, this means the PSU itself is quite old—possibly over 19 years. That’s a lot of age, especially when trying to run anything. It’s only suitable for lightweight setups.
Even if it manages to start up, there’s a strong risk of the PSU failing suddenly and emitting smoke, which could damage everything connected to it, including your entire PC.
Group-regulated PSUs don’t work well with today’s CPU deep sleep features, such as C5, C6, C7, etc.
Since this unit powers the entire system, it’s absolutely crucial.
Therefore, never compromise on a quality PSU! And avoid purchasing used ones either.
For a gaming rig, a Tier A PSU is essential. Examples include Seasonic Focus/Vertex/PRIME, Corsair RMx/RMi/HXi/AXi, and Super Flower Leadex Gold/Platinum/Titanium.
PSU tier recommendations:

Tier A is sufficient, while Tier A+ is preferred.
My three PCs are exclusively powered by Tier A PSUs—specifically, Seasonic PRIME 650 Titanium (Tier A+), Seasonic PRIME Ultra 650 Titanium (Tier A+), and Seasonic Focus PX-550 (Tier A). Detailed specifications and images are available in my profile.
