Will an 850w power supply suffice for the i9-10900K CPU and a 6900 XT graphics card?
I just swapped out my RTX 3070 for a 6900 XT in my backup machine. It’s still dropping randomly during tough games like BF6. I have an extra 850W Bitfenix Whisper M and haven’t run into problems with it, even when paired with the 6900 XT on 850 watts. The 10900K seems to draw a lot of power. Should I go for an 850W PSU or upgrade to a 1000W one for my backup?
I would purchase a 1.2kW unit. The CPU can handle around 330W, according to the review: The GPU can reach up to about 615W, as detailed here: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/gigab...oc/35.html Combined they consume nearly 1000W, which would leave no room for other components if you opt for a 1kW unit. A 1.2kW unit still provides good headroom. For a PC with a dedicated GPU, Tier A PSUs are recommended. Examples include Seasonic Focus/Vertex/PRIME, Corsair RMx/RMi/HXi/AXi, and Super Flower Leadex Gold/Platinum/Titanium. PSU recommendations can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...JW...1973454078 Tier A is suitable, while Tier A+ is preferred. My two PCs are powered exclusively by Tier A+ PSUs. I own Seasonic PRIME 650 Titanium (Tier A+) and Seasonic PRIME Ultra 650 Titanium (Tier A+). Specs and images are listed in my profile. Note: Your BitFenix Whisper M is also a Tier A unit, but it’s outdated—about 10 years old as of today.
Is the 10900k significantly more power-hungry than the 5800x3d? The 6900xt performed well on the bitfenix 850w before my main PC upgrade. Also, at full power, the system draws about 650-700w during bf6. I’m considering a 1kw upgrade because I found a great deal on a new rm1000x for around $130, and if it can handle 850w then I won’t need to worry.
Notably, the i9-10900K is capable of handling substantial power output, reaching over 330W. The R7 5800X3D reaches approximately 110W, according to the review at the provided link. This indicates a significant difference in power usage. However, it's uncertain if your monitor can accurately capture the brief power surges from the GPU. It seems likely that the monitor only displays average consumption and may miss short spikes lasting around 10 or 20 milliseconds. Regarding your 850W unit, it appears to be quite outdated—consider replacing it entirely if you're concerned about reliability, especially since old PSUs can fail completely and damage connected devices. With such aging components, the protection features of the PSU may no longer function effectively, and capacitor degradation is another concern regardless of usage. Bitfenix Whisper M comes with a 7-year warranty, and here are the details:

When the warranty expires, the outcome depends on how much load you apply to the PSU.
Montech Century II offers 1050W for $110 and is a reliable Tier A model.
A higher-tier option is the 1200W version priced at $160, also a solid Tier A choice.
