I've been checking Amazon for Netgear and Tp-link Wifi Range Extenders. You need coverage outside your main house on the 5ghz band. Should I consider buying an access point, using repeaters, or setting up a router as an access point?

Pick one of Ubiquiti's APs and stay focused—this will cover your whole area.

I agree with that. You can connect a U biquiti AP to another Ubiquiti AP to act as a repeater, maintaining good speeds in both 2GHz and 5GHz bands. It’s definitely worth the effort. In short, you’d require a "cloud key" plus two AP AC PRO units, along with two Ethernet ports on your router—one for the cloud key and another for an access point.
