WiFi intermittently drops on Ubuntu Server 20.04
Hi everyone! I'm setting up a NextCloud server on an old laptop for my daughter, and I'm facing some WiFi issues. Here are the steps I'm trying to fix: installing wireless tools and updating the configuration files, enabling DHCP and DHCP client services, configuring network interfaces, and adjusting system settings. After rebooting, I can connect via SSH but the connection keeps dropping on the network card. I've tested different NICs like Broadcom, Atheros, and Intel, but the problem persists. Anyone have any ideas or solutions? Thanks! zog
based on my use of ubuntu server, i suggest using a wired connection or avoiding it altogether. the ubuntu server is a very minimal operating system, offering only basic hotplug capabilities. for better performance and compatibility, consider xubuntu desktop—it's lightweight enough to avoid significant performance hits and supports wifi.
I've tested various WiFi NICs and they all function properly on Ubuntu with a fresh install. Wired connections are reliable, but Wi-Fi is necessary for placing the server in a discreet spot. I'm considering a used Lenovo M73 from eBay for around $30 USD.
