WiFi connection experiences reduced performance during torrent downloads due to limited bandwidth.
I subscribe to a 100 Mbps plan with Teksavvy and typically receive around 20 Mbps during speed tests on my PC in the office via Wi-Fi, a bit higher on my phone or laptop when near the router. My issue now is that whenever I begin downloading continuously—like a game, torrent, or large file—I quickly reach 2-3 MPBS, causing a noticeable drop in internet speed across all devices, such as 300 kpbs slowdowns. While I understand some bandwidth is used for downloads, it seems even moderate speeds can overwhelm the network, leaving little capacity left. My router model is a Dlink AC1200 dir-822.
It seems the Wi-Fi connection isn’t strong enough. A 20 Mbit rate feels slow. Would you receive a 100 Mbit connection over a wired link? Are there significant distances or interference between the router and devices? The 2-3 MegaByte size converts to that 20 Mbit, which explains why your network becomes busy if you're using limited bandwidth.
The DIR-822 is quite outdated for a WiFi 5 device, especially with only fast Ethernet ports available. Based on its specifications, it likely belongs to an earlier WiFi 5 generation rather than the newer wave. Its limited RAM (64MB) and flash storage (8MB) further restrict performance when handling multiple connections, such as torrent downloads. It’s unlikely you’ll achieve better results with this model. Upgrading would probably be necessary for improved functionality.
