You're right to consider the trade-offs. Depending on the motherboard options, you might end up spending more than the adapter itself. Most people already have extra PCIe slots, so it's usually not a big issue. It becomes a problem mainly if you go with an ITX build and don't have any spare slots. Technically, my motherboard does include built-in WiFi, but it's permanently attached to the board, making upgrades difficult.
