WiFi 6 mesh system as Ethernet alternative
Hey! The challenge I face is this: My ISP router connects through the living room to my house, but I need a super-fast link to my office room—no more than 15 meters away and one floor higher. Right now I’m using an older mesh network from my previous ISP, which works fine and gives me a solid Ethernet connection to my PC. But at my PC I only get about 240/150Mb/s, not the full 400/400Mb/s I’m paying for. I’m thinking about switching to Wi-Fi 6 routers, since they’re getting more common and could really boost speeds. Any tips on what works well here? What devices did you use, and would you suggest this setup?
Running a cable is the top choice. Wireless signals are unpredictable. Their strength relies on network traffic, nearby networks, competing devices, the materials in your home, and the specific frequency you're using—24 GHz works better through walls and floors than 5 GHz.
People often share their insights on newer Wi-Fi 6 mesh routers, particularly regarding reliability and coverage. While some high-end models exist, many users prefer testing real-world performance before investing. This helps ensure the setup meets expectations for consistent connectivity across rooms.
WiFi relies heavily on its surrounding conditions for proper setup. Individual experiences won’t be as useful because factors like home size, construction materials, distance between the router and devices, and interference from other electronics play a big role. Remember, many wireless devices operate on 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, while radar also uses parts of the 5 GHz spectrum. The main factor affecting performance often lies with the router’s firmware rather than raw numbers.
Wifi 6 will offer the most benefit for people in extremely crowded wireless spaces, such as tall apartment complexes. Its main upgrades focus on handling busy environments, particularly with the new Wi-Fi 6E band. Although it doesn’t send out stronger signals like Wi-Fi 5, you probably won’t notice a significant jump compared to what you already have.
