Hi! You're looking for a fiber home internet solution that lets you keep your own networking equipment. Your ISP offers free installation of their Alcatel Lucent routers, but you want something you can use without relying on theirs. I was surprised to see that most recommendations only mention Wi-Fi routers with optical SFP ports, which are typically designed for ISPs. I reached out to ask if anyone knows a commercially available router with an optical SFP port and support for LEDE/OpenWRT.

You require an SFP-enabled Wi-Fi router because your ISP installs fiber directly into their modem, and then connects via Ethernet to your customer premises equipment. Using this setup adds no real benefit—only additional expenses.

They struggle with technical queries, but from what I see, the usual method is connecting fiber into their Wi-Fi routers that have the port, which they provide at no cost. If I had asked for a basic modem, I’d expect extra charges before guiding me toward the standard option repeatedly.

The concept is they perform better with your internet service provider's connection. Modems lacking support might cause significant problems since your ISP likely can't handle them or help with further issues if the device fails.

I get why they do it. My goal is to manage my own network independently, without relying on two routers at home.

Your internet service provider is the company that delivers your connection. You can find suitable routers by checking their supported services.

People look for the ISP’s website to buy Wi-Fi routers but find none with optical connections.

I don't have access to that specific information. You'll need to check directly with your internet service provider for details about their network infrastructure.

They lay fiber directly to your home and set up an ONT device that changes the fiber signal to copper before sending it to your router. You can use any router without needing an SFP module.
