I just set up Linux Mint 18.3 on my machine (specs listed) but I’m not facing the issues mentioned. I have the NVIDIA 384 driver and kernel 4.15.0-29 installed. What version of the kernel are you running? To verify, open a terminal and run: uname -r

Yeah, Ubuntu GNOME desktop can feel slow. You might want to check out Cinnamon or XFCE instead. I stuck with GNOME though—it looks nicer and has more features, and its performance works fine for me.
