Why is there "Year of Linux" Hype
I find the Linux hype odd. I noticed it early with wine 3.x.x and dxvk, when people were excited about fast gaming with Lutris. The idea of Linux feels a bit over the top for me. What are your thoughts?
I wasn't familiar with this buzz. Probably the Proton in Steam is the reason, at least for someone who uses Linux.
It's due to people wanting things to work but not always succeeding. I've been using Linux since I was 12, and it's usually just a secondary system. Windows is my go-to for certain tasks. With Ubuntu's focus on Snap and other distros tied to that approach, I don't see much change soon. I tried Ubuntu last night and it crashed with errors because of Snap. Linux developers should concentrate on one platform and deliver reliable software. Once they commit, I'll think about switching back, but for now I'm sticking with Windows. I don't love Windows much, but it's better than Linux right now.
Now it's just a joke, everyone thinks a new update will instantly make Linux the go-to desktop OS, but it never really happens. There isn’t one group that builds a unified "Linux operating system" you can rely on. The kernel exists separately, and each distribution adds its own software to create a full system. When people refer to "Linux developers," they mean various teams working independently, many of whom aren’t even seen as OS creators. You could just choose one distro—most do fine. It’s strange how it’s always been smooth for me. Still, Snap is trying to simplify things by offering a common package format that works across different setups without relying on specific libraries or repositories.
I often change my mind because each option has its limits. My frustration is high—I’d say Windows is really poor, while Linux could work better with more third-party tools.
What are you actually after? What’s the real issue here? Distro-hopping just shows that people aren’t really understanding what’s happening beneath the surface. And for full support, go with RHEL. No matter how long people have used Linux, most won’t ever consider thinking outside the “Microsoft box.”
Ubuntu 20.04 is in my development VM, but I just use .deb and debian repos. I stay away from basically anything that isnt an AppImage, but I am also a 10year+ linux user. Ubuntu works out of the box, it is just a bit boring, ironic from a debian SID user lol
It's a bit confusing. You seem to be stuck in a loop. Do you want to try opening-source or enjoy some wine?
