Why is my Task Manager showing a fast download speed, even though I can't get that kind of speed in real life?
Why is my Task Manager showing a fast download speed, even though I can't get that kind of speed in real life?
I see a task manager saying I can download at 10 megabytes per second. But when I open Chrome or use other programs, the speeds are totally different, and even the speed test says I'm getting a steady 10 mbps down. Also, my upload speed is really low—it's nowhere near 1 mbps.
In my network settings, I'm running Windows 8.1 right now and am about to switch to Windows 10. If the problem comes from the internet itself, I tested this on a torrent site and both sites showed the exact same download speed of 1Mbps.
Task manager and Chrome both show transfer speeds, but they use different units. One unit is Mega BITS per second (Mbps) while the other uses Mega BYTES per second (MB/s). There are eight megabits for every one megabyte, so 10 Mbps equals about 1.25 MB/s. The speeds you see in your Task Manager and Chrome are actually the same speed.
I actually thought I had slow internet just now, but my computer says it's getting things from 32 to 54 megabits per second, while my web page shows me downloading at a rate of 5 to 7 megabytes every second. So right now, I'm using about 44 megabits for my downloads.
