Why is my computer freezing?
Yesterday I began noticing an issue. While playing either TF2 or Overwatch, stopping my mouse movement causes the computer to freeze completely. The only solution is restarting via the reset button, and even after doing that, it repeats when I launch one of those games. I haven’t tried any other games besides Minecraft. On the launcher, there’s a strange visual glitch when I maximize Minecraft—only a quarter of the screen appears, yet all controls remain in the same spot.
Here are my system details:
- Asus GTX 960 (overclocked to +1000 via MSI Afterburner)
- AMD 7700K (overclocked to 4.0 GHz)
- Windows 8.1 (cannot upgrade to Windows 10 for some reason)
I’m sure it’s not overheating, since I can easily restart and play again. No unusual events appear in Event Viewer, just normal errors.
Please ensure your drivers are up to date. Otherwise, proceed with the update.
It might be a corrupted Windows system, requiring a fresh installation for a clean setup. Another possibility is a failing drive that contains both the operating system and games.
If it couldn't reach 10, it might indicate a serious issue that goes beyond just basic performance. Have you pushed your CPU and GPU too hard? Minecraft isn’t demanding much unless you’re using fancy shaders. I’m curious about how stable the official versions are.
I haven’t pushed my CPU or GPU hard, so I’ll keep it simple. I just received my 960 two weeks ago, which means it’s not yet failing, and it’s an OC model built for boosting performance.
OC Edition typically indicates the card has been factory overclocked, operating at higher clock speeds than its original design. The only factor enhancing GPU longevity after overclocking is stronger cooling solutions. Everything else depends on the quality of the silicon itself.
I've reinstalled Windows again and it's working now. But I still can't access Overwatch games. That's frustrating.
