That's all up to me though, I only get updates when I start up, and while my computer is running, it never gets them on its own.

It uses a lot of electricity when it's just sitting there waiting to turn on. The sticker says that for power, you need 1.5 amps at 5 volts. That means the phone or router takes about 7.5 watts of energy right now without doing anything useful.

It might use up to 7.5 watts per hour, but in reality it probably uses much less power. That is actually only a tiny bit more than a regular LED nightlight. Since turning this off would cause you some trouble, I'm just going to leave it on all the time. Most stuff like that works perfectly fine if it doesn't get too hot.
