Why does my Control Panel show internet links instead of programs?
As the question indicates, I have completed all thorough security checks, including both Windows protection and additional antivirus solutions. I tested with .dll hijacker tools to identify any potential malware affecting .dll files and processes linked to the Control Panel. I also ran Malwarebytes’ security scans.
Despite these efforts, nothing has changed. My Control Panel still shows internet links where it should show the Programs list. All other parts of my PC function normally, with no signs of infection. Security tests are clean, and health checks are satisfactory. The only persistent issue remains with the Control Panel itself. It seems unlikely that a malware attack would cause such a specific problem.
In fact, I suspect this is unrelated to any attempt to compromise my .dll files. This issue appears to be another minor glitch in Windows, something Microsoft has repeatedly overlooked despite releasing numerous updates over the past year that have disrupted users and cost them significant productivity. It’s as if they lack awareness of the most basic problems that can arise.
The situation is becoming increasingly frustrating, especially given Microsoft’s size and resources. This problem could be connected to broader Windows instability rather than a targeted attack on my files.
A windows update could have altered the default display from programs to web pages. I noticed, for instance, that the default on closing document files was switched from doing nothing to saving. This caused a lot of confusion when I made a mistake and closed the file, thinking it would remain unchanged. I’m unsure where such settings might be located in the control panel.
