Whole pc crashes and restarts itself in-game or on game launch (Apex Legends)
This issue is flying right past me every time I try and fix it. I've used just about all my resources and they haven't helped.
Here's some details, feel free to ask for more:
If you need a speccy, dxdiag, or ini, I'll grab it.
5800x No OC
5700xt (Radeon) No OC
16 giggle bits of well loved ram. (no horns)
Asrock b450 Pro4
Corsair RM650x (650w power supply)
Windows 10 and its latest update.
This issue is with Apex Legends. Please excuse my dear Copy Paste. I had originally asked EAs Answers HQ and it feels like more of a "scream into a void and feel better about it" kind of forum. I'll edit it to make it make more sense.
This issue has been happening since October, on and off how it happens. When I open the game, there's a chance it will crash my PC entirely and start rebooting instantly just as the game finishes the fancy loading animation. My PC will have shut off and start booting again as if I had hit the reset button on my PC itself. It will crash this way every time there's a crash. The game also crashes in the menu where I can gather parties and choose game modes and such. Same crash. It may also happen suddenly in game with what seems to be no direct correlation to any specific thing I do, whether its typing, shooting, dropping from ship, or running. It has crashed in BR and in the Winter NBR modes both randomly and consistently. the weekend of12/3-12/4 and just before the winter update, the issue had stopped or it did not occur. But it had occurred the weekend prior. I had gotten about 2 games into playing the winter game mode before it crashed again. After attempting to let my PC reboot after shutting down manually, restarting the game would consistently crash upon passing the loading animation. I would not get to see the hub menu before my PC crashed. I did this about a few times before giving up.
Attempting to fix this issue:
I have updated, and downgraded my graphics drivers. I even tried the enterprise update that I had the option to use with no difference.
Clean wiped my graphics drivers in safe mode and reinstalled. No difference.
I had ran an antivirus, all clean.
Ran CCleaner, All good. (Don't judge. Programs nice.)
Updated the rest of the drivers on my PC to make sure there up to date.
Uninstalled programs I don't use.
Turned off all startup applications and otherwise that I do not need running in the background. (Usually nothings on anyways.)
Attempted to run Easy Anti Cheat in low priority mode, that is if the game even had started properly. No luck.
Wallpaper Engine running or not hasn't effected outcome. Keeping it off for now anyways.
Reinstalled the game. Also on another drive. (originally my boot drive) No change, though game loads slowly. (My external SSD from 2014. Still kickin. Time to retire the poor thing?)
^ For note, my game is currently running on my C: drive.
Ran game immediately after PC boot.
Game already has firewall exceptions.
Frame rate is capped for monitor refresh rate/vsync. Tried with and without vsync and freesync.
And with that I am lost. I've done all I can do. I can scour my PC well if there's a service I have to turn off or something.
The game continues to crash. I plan on reinstalling Windows 10 a few months from now when I have built my new PC, but I don't want to have to do it now just to have myself do it again later. I am seriously out of luck or ideas here.
If you need any more information please ask I'll grab it for you.
Updated the remaining drivers on my PC to ensure everything is current.
Checking if you used Driver Booster while using CCleaner on Windows 10?
What BIOS version do you have installed for your motherboard right now?
Are you using the Asrock b450 Pro4?
How recent is your motherboard?
Do you have 16 giggle bits of well-loved RAM? (no horns)
Do you have a link to your RAM kit?
(My external SSD from 2014. Still in good shape. Time to let it go.)
My game is currently running on the C: drive.
It would be helpful to know your storage options, including their manufacturers and models.
What kind of cooling system are you employing and how is the airflow in your setup? The 5800x tends to get warmer compared to other Ryzen CPUs from that time. I’m currently using one with a 240mm AIO, and it reached 80 degrees Celsius during a Cinebench R23 test. Based on this article, the 5700xt can reach up to 110 degrees Celsius. My observations show frequent crashes caused by overheating or power issues. The Corsair RXMX is a solid choice, but power supplies tend to degrade over time and may not deliver the same performance they once did. According to AMD, the minimum power supply required for that card is 600 watts. https://www.amd.com/en/products/graphics...rx-5700-xt
How long has your power supply been in use? The Corsair RXMX is excellent, but like all components, power supplies lose efficiency and can’t maintain the same output as new. AMD specifies that this card needs a minimum of 600 watts. https://www.amd.com/en/products/graphics...rx-5700-xt
In my view, addressing these points would be wise. Visit AsRock’s website and ensure you have the most recent BIOS installed; if not, update it in case they’ve made improvements. On amd.com, download and install the latest chipset drivers for your board. From there, install the newest GPU drivers, choosing those marked as recommended rather than optional. Additionally, consider using a temperature monitoring tool such as hwmonitor to keep track of your temperatures. If your cooling isn’t sufficient, you might want to upgrade by adding more fans or even a new CPU cooler. As I mentioned, I’m still managing to keep the 5800x running at a reasonable temperature despite its size.
Hello! Just confirming the BIOS version is set to 5.60 and ensuring the CMOS is cleared for accurate installation.
You're right about wanting the most recent info. I confirmed it for you using the B350 model and version 7.40.
I've used CCleaner to verify my drivers. Everything looks current. I'll refresh once I've reviewed my BIOS settings. It should be the newest version. Resetting to defaults and examining XMP options might also help. If everything is up to date, I'll try those too.
My power supply dates back to 2019.
Teamgroup Vulcan. 2 x 8gb DDR4-3000 sticks
The external SSD is a 1 tb WD My Passport from before 2015. Windows reported it failed when I connected it recently. USB Micro B was a nice surprise.
My C: drive is a 500gb WD Blue M.2 SSD and my second storage is a 1tb Crucial M.2 2280.
I'm dealing with this issue in a Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-04 ATX Mid Tower case. I don't recall the exact model, but it's a robust 2-fan Thermalright unit. I've been concerned about its heat output, especially for the 5800x, which tends to get quite warm. Before, I replaced it with better thermal components and only slightly improved performance. I've also run benchmarks to evaluate thermal behavior, and the results were satisfactory—no thermal throttling or excessive temperatures. If I can record my peak temperatures later, I'll share them here.
I intend to conduct additional benchmarks simultaneously to assess stability under high loads.
The front panel has two fans: one at the front and another near the rear fan, which I also have. Both are 2 in, 2 out. All case fans respond well, and I've customized their curves for better airflow. Noise isn't a major concern for me.
I'm aiming to purchase an AIO once my build is complete.
My guess points to the power supply as the likely culprit here.
I can buy one now since I'll need a replacement eventually, and if I can't fix it, I'll try that option. It's not risky. My father works in IT and believes his 650 series will handle it (it's doing so), but he's more cautious about the latest tech hype. He's been assembling PCs from spare parts and old storage drives, making him a valuable resource most of the time. He ran out of ideas.
Thankfully, I'm constructing a brand new PC—disassembling an old 2013 build. It worked well. Sorry for the story. I'll look into upgrading to a more powerful power supply so I don't run into problems when installing new components again.
The recommended drivers remain the same this time, though I had to reinstall them this morning.
One additional point: occasionally, crashes can corrupt my drivers and cause them to disappear from Windows—whether in search, control panel, or context menu. It's unusual but worth noting. Also, nothing unusual appears in Event Viewer (Windows logs, Applications). No errors or warnings after a crash. Not even a Thumbprint issue, which I resolved earlier.
