Who is Winning in the CPU Space?
It's been two weeks since Alder Lake launched, and most of the excitement has faded. People are now focusing on whether Intel and AMD are still competing effectively. Has Intel gained an edge? Is AMD still offering strong value? Are they both solid choices? For me, both have merits—Intel shines with better performance and lower prices (DDR4), though the 12th-gen models have some issues. AMD has seen its 5800X price drop, and its platform is now more reliable. The 5600X and Ryzen 9s are starting to feel a bit overpriced. Overall, I think both sides have their strengths and weaknesses, and I’m comfortable suggesting either option. What do you think?
In the x86 world, AMD truly stands out. Their processors run smoother with powerful cores versus Intel’s mixed strategy. If they stick with their current path, the 12th gen could become outdated as soon as the Ryzen 6000 launches, except perhaps in single-core scenarios. Intel’s pricing edge comes from cutting prices on older parts more aggressively. AMD maintains MSRP during product lifecycles, then drops them steadily after replacement. Chip shortages have let AMD hold their value longer. In mobile, AMD leads in the x86 segment. Looking at Apple’s M series, they’re very efficient, delivering top performance with minimal power use and no real rivals. All they need now is to build desktop chips that can handle high power without breaking the bank.
AMD has discovered effective solutions now. With the rollout of DDR5 and AM5 connectors, they should soon offer a strong CPU range. If only they extended those improvements to their GPU offerings in terms of drivers, AMD could dominate both segments.

Intel Alder Lake is emerging as a strong contender in gaming, even if it didn’t surpass AMD’s Zen3 significantly. It displayed considerable power consumption, but adjusting the voltage during overclocking can yield comparable draw levels. For video work, Intel QSV shines while Zen3 struggles. Meanwhile, Z690 boards remain pricier than X570 alternatives, especially when considering CPU costs. Available DDR5 options are constrained—high-end choices are expensive now and may rise further. In rendering tasks, full-core Zen3 still outperforms mixed configurations against Ryzen 9s. Overall, the choice hinges on balancing value, performance, and use case. I’d say Ryzen 9s remain competitive, but the 5600X and 5800X don’t hold up as well. P cores offer better performance than Zen3, unlike the i9 versus R9 comparison, where Zen3 lacks a clear edge in core count.
I own both Intel and AMD machines, and if I were to create one now, it would likely be an AMD 5000 setup. In a few months, things might shift.
