Will purchasing three separate 8GB storage units function properly? You've already received one as a gift.

It's a matter of probability. If you only possess a single stick, I'd likely part it off and opt for a 2x16GB package instead. Locating a seller with three RAM sticks is challenging, and you're counting on compatibility occurring twice.

I’m purchasing a new system, does that affect anything? Would I really require that much memory?

The main issue stems from RAM makers altering the memory IC type even within the same model number based on their available stock. The specific IC determines compatibility; some work well together while others won’t POST. As you move up the speed scale, chances of successful pairing drop significantly. In my experience, about 75% succeed without issues, 20% function but don’t meet rated specs, and 5% fail entirely even with matching sticks. For pairs, odds of failure rise, especially when choosing between single sticks or kits—kit prices usually stay around $10 extra. Beyond 16GB is rare, though some modern titles now use more than that, making 32GB a viable option if you’re purchasing a kit.

I believe I'll keep with the 2x8GB setup, thanks for the suggestion.
