I'm planning to set up another system soon and will need a second Windows copy. I'm not sure which version to choose—should I stick with Windows 7 in 2014 or switch to Windows 8? Honestly, I prefer Windows 7 because it's familiar, I'm comfortable with it, and I worry I won't adjust as much with Windows 8. My setup includes an i7 5820k processor, an Asus Rampage V Extreme motherboard, and a Samsung 850 PRO or EVO drive. I'll perform overclocking, and the main use will be gaming.

I suggest W8. For extended use, driver and other support will remain available longer on W8.

Windows 8.1 offers a more comprehensive experience overall. I use 7 on my desktop and 8.1 on my laptop (not a touchscreen), and I favor the latter version.

It offers a high degree of personalization similar to W7. If you decide to move to W8, you’ll probably switch right away to W10 when it launches.

Windows 8 offers marginally improved gaming performance over Windows 7, making it a better choice in that area. While you might prefer Windows 7 due to familiarity, the shift in operating systems should be embraced for its advantages. Ultimately, the decision depends on individual tastes.
