Which RAM Is Best?
Due to the GPU shortage, I’ll be reducing my active PCs to a single unit and need guidance on the ideal RAM setup. I’m planning a Mini-ITX build with two RAM slots, featuring a 5800X and an RX 6800 XT. The intended uses include gaming, streaming (Twitch and Parsec), VR, and Plex serving. I have two RAM choices: -32GB (2x16) at 3600mhz with CAS 16, and 16GB (2x8) at 3800mhz with CAS 14. My instinct is to opt for the 32GB configuration—it won’t be slow, but I’m still unsure which is best. Need your advice.
Choosing the 32gb model slightly reduces your score, though the difference isn't huge. Opt for the 16gb if you prefer a more balanced performance.
Considering a 32 GB kit might be a good choice. You can definitely get a 32 GB version.
For gaming, 16GB is ideal. A 3800 CAS 14 offers significantly better performance compared to 3600 at 16GB, boosting speed by about 16%. This helps avoid frequent lag and enables higher frame rates. Roughly, expect a 3–4 fps boost in the lowest 0.1% FPS improvement and up to 1% in the lowest 1%. The top performance gains should be around 3–4 fps as well.
We have options with two configurations for 32GB and two for 16GB. Looking through the comments, I believe I’ve found a solution. The 16GB model should provide smoother gameplay, while the 32GB version will handle other tasks more effectively. I’m okay trading off about 2-3 frames per second for improved VR and streaming performance.
