Hi all,
I just purchased a desktop PC for my child. It includes a G4560 processor, which benchmarks easily surpassed by a 6600K. I have an old 6600K and a Hyper EVO 212 cooler nearby. Should I replace the processor before setting it up? The main use will be light gaming to see if the child likes it. Will this affect performance noticeably? The unit comes with an RX 480 GPU, 8GB RAM, and an M.2 SSD. I might add more RAM if needed. Both processors seem outdated for Windows 11. Please let me know your thoughts.
Have a nice day.
Best regards,
CJ

Thank you for the update. The motherboard is an MSI B250M PRO-VD, Socket-1151, mATX, B250, DDR4.

It will accommodate it. Verify the BIOS version to see if an update is necessary before making changes. This setup does not support W11. A 6600K and 480 should provide good balance for older gaming. Remember, while a modern console can significantly improve performance, other PC aspects such as productivity and entertainment should also be considered. I still use a 6600 (non K) and 750ti as a streaming system for a "not smart" TV. Correction – I recently swapped that system just before Christmas. It was a strange holiday this year.

I believe I should try the new pc in its current state first.
Any issues here will influence future choices.
I don’t expect a big performance gap compared to the G5460, except for multithreaded batch applications.
The main concern with using 6600K as a reference is that you’re unsure if it was overclocked.
If your 8gb of RAM consists of two 4gb modules, you’ll need to upgrade to a 2 x 8gb package.
Or more likely, you already have one 8gb stick; adding another will improve performance through dual-channel operation.
Using mismatched RAM isn’t certain to work, so I’d invest a bit more in a proper 2 stick setup—around $30.
Installing the 6600K makes sense. Do it before powering up the pc or you might lose it.
Check that the Hyper212’s height fits well in the case.
