I own an older gaming setup built around 2013 that was originally intended as a 2008 PC with a Core 2 Q9550 and an 8800GT (built for titles such as F.E.A.R, Mirrors Edge, and Far Cry 2). After that, I upgraded to an R9 270X a few years ago at a low cost, but I suspect the motherboard is no longer functional (I’ve tried posting about it, but there’s nothing much left).

Right now, finding decent LGA775 boards is tough in my region, so I’m considering an upgrade that matches the era of the R9 270X—something from around 2013 (COD BO2, BF3, FC3, Driver SF, etc.). My choices are either a first-gen i5/i7 (LGA1156) or a 2600k (LGA1155). A first-gen model would be more unique and rare, which could make it more interesting, but it would also be harder to locate if I ever need one. An unlocked second-gen board would be less rare, making replacement easier.

Please share your thoughts, the more input the better.

2013. 4th generation Intel. i7 4770K is definitely the best choice. The CPU you're referring to might be from an earlier model. The 2600K was also an excellent option.

I actually own a prebuilt system with a 4770 (non-K), which had the motherboard fail two years ago. I mistakenly thought the 4000 series was more recent, remembering it was often paired with a GTX 970. The boards also don't seem too costly, around 55$ for a Z79M board. Unless I purchase a 4770K, I won't be able to overclock them.
In reality, since I can find a 2600K+ board plus RAM for 60$, I think I'll go with that instead.

4770 performs better than 2600K and you already own it at home, so I’d likely choose a Haswell-compatible motherboard. Since it’s not a K model, you might find a more affordable option with an H87 or B85 chipset.

Yeah, that's accurate, but in a way I'm not focusing on performance. I already have a faster setup. If I had the chance, I'd just purchase another LGA775 motherboard and the (limited) Q9550 chipset. I can't seem to locate any good options for sale.

Yeah, I understand. I also enjoy fixing old computers or creating them from the ground up. It's becoming increasingly tough to locate functional vintage components each year. My most recent build used an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 Ultra from 2003.
