For the Ryzen 7 7700 (non-X), compare these two motherboards to see which runs cooler without throttling: GIGABYTE B650M K AMD AM5 and MSI PRO B650M-P DDR5 AMD AM5. Since you're focusing on productivity tasks like AutoCAD, Blender, Photoshop, and don't plan to use gaming features, prioritize stability and cooling performance. The GIGABYTE option is likely more budget-friendly and available locally, while the MSI model offers better cooling but at a higher cost.

Without PBO, both motherboards can support a 7700 without thermal throttling from VRMs. Without PBO, the CPU draws up to 88W. CPUs that throttle on these boards operate at around 230W under full load. I recommend checking the board's specifications for the required features.

Could using PBO affect your CPU's temperature control? I understand the CPU might handle up to 142 watts, but it usually improves by only about 3-5% when PBO is active.

It should work without issues. I couldn't locate info on the MSI board, but the Gigabyte model performed better than others and didn't throttle despite drawing 230W. Running at 142W would still be fine. A Techspot chart from the B650 round-up confirms the B650M K stays under 100°C after the 7950X was running Cinebench for an hour.

Another update from the same platform presenting a completely different view, making it hard to decide what to focus on.

The distinction between those two evaluations wasn’t clear to me, but the Ryzen 7 7700 won’t force the boards to their limits like the 7950X does. I came across the detailed 56-board review that outlines the results and notes: it confirms that if you’re not using a Ryzen 9 chip, the system will perform adequately. However, having a board with a blue bar next to it would be preferable in terms of price and capabilities. The piece lists 56 boards, with 45 passing the test: https://www.techspot.com/review/2861-amd...ds-part-3/. You might want to check if any of the remaining boards without throttling issues match your needs. If you don’t enable PBO, the R7 7700 should work well on both platforms.

Thank you! This should clarify your options clearly.
