For an E5-2697 v3 or two, go with the recommended board that matches your power needs. If you need something compact, look for a cooler designed to fit in a 3U rack.

It mainly depends on the availability of compatible boards. If you need two units, you'll likely have to check eBay for server class options. Once new marketplaces are out of reach, price comparisons become less reliable. You can usually spot similar pricing for Maximus Extreme tier boards alongside DS3H tiers. Focus on finding a dual socket LGA 2011 V3 board on eBay, opting for the lowest price while keeping essential features intact. Avoid skipping necessary expansion ports—stripping out PCIe slots is common for savings. Prioritize brands with strong home lab support, such as Supermicro, which maintains BIOS updates and downloads for non-enterprise users. ASRock Rack and Gigabyte’s server line are also worth considering, though you haven’t personally tested them. In your search, an X10DAX board might be affordable, but only after a short eBay browsing session.

You're explaining why you're reaching out. On eBay I can locate both server and gaming boards, with prices ranging from around 300 to 100. I don't really require a server board and I'm not looking for two CPUs in it. However, I'm encountering what are called "gaming" boards. These usually mean they're not optimized for gaming performance, and people who want to play games might skip the E5-2697 or similar parts, which could affect functionality. I'm seeking a board with ECC RAM and at least one PCIx16 slot plus three or more x8 slots. If I could identify which single socket boards meet these criteria, I could target those specifically. Are such specialized boards available, or will I need to settle for a server board?

Most ASUS X99 boards include ECC support, as confirmed by checking Ebay listings and verifying processor compatibility. These capabilities are generally well maintained across the platform, though it's wise to review the specific motherboard's support page for confirmation.
