Which laptops or similar devices from a user's perspective can withstand beach sand and high temperatures? They must not require additional cooling, endure minor sand exposure and splashes of saltwater, have durable screens, and maintain visibility. A screen size between 13" and 15" is acceptable. The device should support TeXLive and PDF viewers, and offer connectivity options like WiFi or Bluetooth. It should allow a person to work on typesetting while others enjoy swimming nearby.

@COLGeek,
,
@USAFRet: Thank you! I’ll review it. Regarding the comment about your work being extraordinary: my project with a similar device would mainly involve simple formatting using LaTeX. The military certification appears excessive and possibly not ideal. For instance, the device isn’t likely to face issues like falling, freezing, or being exposed to vibrations or explosive gases during normal use. It will also encounter humidity, and the saltiness of water droplets (and some sand) is a concern as noted in the white paper at the provided link.

There are limited choices when comparing a standard laptop to a weather-resistant one. Your two main worries about sand and saltwater are particularly risky.

The sand and sun are not your allies, which is why these suggestions are made.

I genuinely believe an iPad would be suitable for this purpose if it meets all your requirements. They also have a clever feature—everything fits inside, and the touch screen operates via a ziplock baggie.

I don't own an iPad, so I would need to depend on others' insights about using LaTeX on one.

They note water resistance but not saltwater resistance. The distinction matters greatly: pure water acts as a strong electrical insulator, while saltwater conducts electricity efficiently. The tough laptops usually come with many extra features beyond what I need (like shock protection).
