I’m planning to build a PC soon with a budget around US$1,600 (flexible a bit). I’m unsure which CPU to choose between the 5600X and the 5900X. If I go with the 5600X, I might opt for the 6800XT (assuming AMD’s claims hold), but choosing the 5900X would likely let me afford a high-end 2070 Super. Right now I play CSGO, GTA V, RDR 2, Insurgency Sandstorm, COD MW, and I’m planning to try cyberpunk. For games where FPS is key, I’ll probably lower the graphics settings as much as possible, but for open-world titles like RDR and GTA, I tend to keep settings higher. Personally, I’m leaning toward a high refresh rate 1080p display rather than 1440p, since I think it’s sufficient now—though I haven’t seen a 1440p monitor except on mobile. Some say CPU performance in 1080p matters more than in 1440p, which is why I’m undecided. A 2070 S is still solid today and enough for now, but it’s from the previous generation. That’s why I’m a bit confused about the right choice. Upgrading from my current laptop will be a big jump, but I’m just not sure yet. I’ll probably overclock whichever one I pick. I do some light photo/video editing, but mostly handle heavy Excel and data analysis tasks. The 5600X and 5900X perform almost identically in gaming. You receive about 99% of the 5900X’s gaming speed from the 5600X. Skip the extra cores if you don’t need them, and you can still experiment with overclocking. My 5600X operates at 4.7GHz all-core, just 100MHz lower than the 5900X’s single-core turbo boost. The 5900X likely won’t exceed that speed.
