It seems you're trying to figure out the best video codec for your Vega 56 GPU, especially since it can't handle either VP9 or AV1. You're concerned about compatibility and performance with a 4770k GPU. Consider what each codec offers: VP9 is generally more efficient for lower-end GPUs, while AV1 provides better quality but may require more processing power. Since your GPU struggles with both, you might want to test both options in a controlled setting to see which gives you smoother playback or better visuals without overwhelming your hardware.

YouTube selects the optimal format automatically, usually AV1 if it exists. It's an improvement over VP9.

I believe AV1 might be more demanding on the 4770K than VP9 since VP9 is less resource-heavy. The visual output would likely improve, though processing power will increase. Vega56 lacks a dedicated VP9 decoder, but some decoding tasks could still run faster on hardware. It offers hybrid decoding for profile 0 (8-bit formats), but most YouTube videos are probably in profile 2 (10-bit VP9). The same applies to the integrated graphics on that Intel CPU – it supports hybrid decoding both via the CPU and the graphics card. You might want to adjust the active video card settings in Chrome as suggested in this Reddit discussion, though I’m not sure it’s necessary. Just let the software handle decoding instead.
