Hey guys, the choice depends on your needs. With dual channel you get more bandwidth per connection, while quad channel gives even higher throughput. If you already have two 8GB sticks and add two more for a total of 32GB, it’s better to go dual channel for flexibility. A 16GB stick in quad channel would be more efficient if you need that capacity, but dual channel offers more options for expansion.
Your processor's configuration affects whether it uses a quad or dual channel setup, not the quantity of RAM installed.
4x8 or 2x16 will work equally well; the Ryzen 3600 memory controller is solid. For future-proofing, consider 2x16 if you anticipate needing more than 64GB, especially with DDR5 coming soon. If you prefer maximizing slots, go with 4x8 and assume 32GB is sufficient until DDR5 adoption.
In fact, a 4x8 configuration will perform slightly better since the RAM appears to function as if dual-rank modules are present. Dual rank differs from dual-channel operation; the modules can't be written to at the same time as with two channels, but one can be refreshed while another is being written to. This may enhance speed in certain scenarios, such as gaming.
Running should be quicker if the 2x16GB modules are only of one level. In theory, using four single-level sticks performs better than two single-level sticks. Still, two dual-level sticks match the performance.
