It might seem like a fun question, but is it worth the extra 100AUD for a 9800? Will the 7800 cover everything needed for current and future games? Clearly, the 9000 series is newer, but its value depends on your setup. I’ve checked around and both options seem to be performing well. Since I’m planning a custom build, I need the appropriate motherboard that matches the chip I’ll install. Thanks.

If I found myself in your situation, I would choose the most recent hardware available within my wallet's limits. In essence, I'd opt for the 9800X3D.

Both options are excellent for gaming, though 9800x3d performs slightly better.
If the $100 provides a superior GPU for your setup, pair it with the 7800x3d and a better GPU for overall improved performance.
For those who prioritize cost, the 9800x3d offers longevity before needing an upgrade.
Both processors are compatible with any recent AM5 motherboard, so there are no issues there.

Purchase the superior item if your finances allow.
The additional money will cause some discomfort for a short time.
The second evaluation will remain with you for a longer period.

The 7800 would cost me 800 aud, making the 9800 around 900 aud. Plus, I'll receive a 9070. A 5070 would be similar in price.

The 9800X3D offers the benefit of an additional cache die positioned below the CPU die, addressing the cooling challenges faced by earlier models like the 7800X3D. This design choice allowed AMD to avoid reducing clock speeds, enabling better performance in real-world production scenarios. Investing an extra $100 for the 9800X3D is justified if you value its enhanced capabilities.

Honestly, if that extra 100 isn't going to be used on getting a better GPU, I would say go for the 9800X3D. Itll last a bit longer life cycle wise than the 7800X3D.

Thank you all. Very useful. I plan to choose the 9800 and attempt to find a fitting AsRock motherboard for it.

It seems the x3d processors are quite sensitive to increased voltages or voltage spikes. I've heard the 7800x3d is relatively stable and safer, though not significantly lagging in performance.

The 9800 has been running for more than a month and is performing well. The AIO liquid cooler display shows idle mode at 40°C, while gaming temperatures range from 45 to 50°C. So far, all my purchases have been functioning nicely.
