What you see is now regarded as outdated RAM. It combines elements from Desktop DDR2, DDR3, and server FB-DIMM DDR2/DDR3 designs. What I appreciate about these units is their solid, tightly fitting metal heat spreader that gives them a distinctive feel—almost like holding a real stick of RAM, similar to the old Pentium 4 RIMMs. I’ve been looking extensively but haven’t managed to locate DDR4 RAMs with this exact character. It seems rare now; most what remains are flashy, high-end variants with RGB lighting and unusual shapes. Anyone know if there’s a current line of RAM that matches the look and feel of older models? For context, here’s what the XMS4s typically look like. I’ve also noticed that some brands have increased RAM height and added angled slots for better compatibility. While this might sound like just a complaint, I haven’t found much to support it yet.

Kingston Hyper X Fury remains the classic "aluminum sheets" style. Corsair Vengeance LPX is also that vibe. I went with Trident Z (nonRGB) in my mainboard and it feels really solid when you grip it. With DDR2, the heat spreaders are just decorative now, so you can go bare if you prefer.

Most DDR4 units operate efficiently and consume minimal power, making extensive cooling unnecessary. Heatsinks on older kits are mostly for appearance, often chosen based on cost and aesthetics rather than performance. Custom heat spreaders exist but are costly and only practical for specific use cases involving regular 2V operation.

They seem pretty similar, but they don’t quite match the vibe of the past. I’ve picked them for a specific build already, and I really prefer them over other options, though they still fall short in some ways.

If you're looking to have some fun, you can purchase aluminum bar stock about 1 inch wide and 1/8 inch thick. Sand it down to a 400 grit finish and apply thermal tape to the chips. That’s essentially what OEMs do with their heat spreaders.

The primary type I know is the one that fully buffers and heats up excessively. Regular consumer DDR3 experiences moderate warmth, while DDR4 only gets slightly warm unless pushed to higher frequencies (like during memory validation tests).
