Hello, I’m upgrading from an Intel 5960X with Rog Rampage Extreme Edition to an AMD 5600X with a B550 motherboard. Since the two systems are quite different in architecture and company history, I think Windows will need to be reinstalled from the beginning. But there are some internal drives on my system that aren’t C (d onwards) and I want to keep their data. Should I format these drives again to use them, or can I just leave them as they are and still access the files I already have? Updated December 30, 2021 by TheTidyGamer
Both systems run on AMD hardware, so adding the drive shouldn't cause any problems.
That seems like a reasonable plan. Just setting up your C drive temporarily makes sense until you can afford backups for the others. Once you're ready, you can reformat everything at that time. Thanks for catching that—clarity is important! I'm new to forum discussions, so sorry about that.
He mentions both storage partitions and drives, not just the system partition.
I understand the situation. I’ll stick to my boot drive only and avoid other devices except the one mentioned. That specific drive won’t need formatting since it’s just media. Reinstalling everything will be tough, but it might help me reset things properly.
You could try using the drive without reformatting to add new programs, even if existing ones aren’t functioning. You might continue this approach until you have backups, after which you can perform fresh installations.
