the manual mentions a condition where m.2_2 must be occupied by another m.2 device for pice x16_1 to operate in x8 mode. i found online discussions suggesting this setup is only possible with dual m.2 slots, but i’m not sure. my rog b450-f gaming ii has only one m.2 slot, so i’m worried it might limit performance if i switch to x8 mode with just one card.

I chose the top position to avoid any problems. Most drives don’t require a headsink, and an aftermarket heatsink is affordable. The X8 speed boost is minimal—usually just a few percent at most.
