When 10 year old PC is booted, the fans spin but in 90% of the boots there's no video and no USB power ? ?
When the 10-year-old PC starts up, the fans turn on but in most cases there’s no video output and no USB connection. After several reboots it works fine again. I’ve been running my first gaming PC from 2015 as a server for a few months. It previously had problems during boot where fans spun but video and USB were missing, and remote access via SSH was also unavailable. Recently, this issue has worsened, occurring almost every time it starts. Rebooting repeatedly sometimes triggers it to work again, though only about one in ten times. Once it does start, it operates normally. I’ve tested various RAM combinations in different slots without success. The problem seems specific, so I’m planning to diagnose and fix it before replacing any components. I have another CPU and GPU available, plus some old PCs with spare parts like a CMOS battery and unused DDR3 RAM. Considering these options, how can I troubleshoot and resolve this?
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
There are a few older PCs nearby where I might be able to collect a CMOS battery. A fresh cell is inexpensive, so I’d prefer a brand-new one rather than salvaging from a board.
PSU: Thermaltake 80+ Bronze 450W Power Supply
Thermaltake is the manufacturer of this unit; 450W is the stated power rating and 80+ Bronze indicates the efficiency level. Could you tell me the model number? If it’s unclear, you’ll need to remove the side panels and share a photo of the labeled information on the back or top of the PSU. We don’t permit file uploads directly, so you’ll have to use Imgur or similar platforms and send us a link.
In the meantime, I plan to acquire a dependable PSU from a friend or neighbor with at least 550W capacity and test it out.
Motherboard: ASRock 970M PRO3 Micro ATX
If you can access the BIOS, could you check the current BIOS version installed on your motherboard?
