Installers typically need a particular operating system. This suggests that once Windows 10 releases, many applications might not work properly with Windows 10 for some time unless they’re updated for it. Running Windows 7 now should keep your current programs intact during the transition to Windows 10, as long as you don’t perform a clean install.

All programs from Vista/W7 and above should function properly, though a few might encounter minor issues.

The question of whether Windows 10 is worth upgrading over Windows 7 hinges on several key factors. Here are some reasons that might encourage the switch:

- Enhanced security features and regular updates keep systems safer.
- Improved performance and responsiveness compared to older versions.
- Better compatibility with modern hardware and software.
- Streamlined user interface and more intuitive navigation.
- Access to new features and tools designed for productivity and efficiency.

8.1 offers better performance compared to Windows 7, making Windows 10 a solid alternative as well.

Faster performance with a user-friendly interface, and everything can be implemented quickly without losing any existing files.

If I follow that reasoning, it won't work for me. My laptop runs Windows 8.1 and my gaming PC uses Windows 7, which I really don’t like for everyday tasks. I’m leaning toward Windows 10 just because it offers a balance between those two versions. There must be a good reason they reverted to Windows 7 design.

8.1 features identical layout, but you avoid using the metro. On my computer I've never used the metro and I'm fine with that.
