Hey there, I'm considering purchasing a router for my upcoming move into a duplex apartment. My networking needs are mostly limited to gaming, and I already have an emby/unraid server connected to my PC. I mostly use wired connections except for streaming on a smart TV. Would I need a very powerful AX model? The options I'm evaluating are: the TP-Link AX6600 from Amazon, the TP-Link Archer GX90 from Best Buy, the TP-Link Archer Wi-Fi 6 from Best Buy, and the ASUS RT-AX58U from Staples.

You're asking why a $270 router shaped like an octopus is necessary. Just pick any router—anything will do. I've used Plex and played on 75MB/s Comcast with their slow rental service. The mention of "gaming routers" gives me pause. Plus, you didn't share your room size or internet provider details.

Sorry about the missing info—under 1000 sqft for the space and it's a duplex. Would competing routers create an issue? Regarding speeds, the plan offers 1000 Mbps down and 750 Mbps up.

To reach those speeds, especially when downloading games, avoid low-cost options.

Sure, I can offer some ideas. Could you clarify what you're referring to with your links? That way I can better assess which suggestions might be helpful.

ASUS is usually praised, TP-Link I’m only ever use when I can install OpenWRT. I don’t have direct experience since I stopped buying consumer routers long ago due to their poor performance. This issue still exists today—QoS won’t help on a Gigabit connection and slows things down significantly.

Ensure your router operates on separate channels for optimal performance. Focus on LAN to WAN and WAN to LAN speeds when choosing a model. These metrics indicate how efficiently the router handles NAT. Some manufacturers list these figures, while others don’t. When selecting, consider additional requirements beyond basic internet speed support—like bandwidth tracking per device. Remember, budgeting matters: inexpensive options often lack the necessary hardware for high-speed NAT. A $300 router might suffice, but aim for at least $80 USD to avoid wasted investment.

Understood, but my response comes after we realized the OP resided in a mansion with excellent internet connectivity.
