OEM versions used to be tied to the motherboard too (at least back in the XP days), so if you used an OEM version and then swapped to a new MoBo you had to buy windows again. Do they still do that or did they stop? EDIT-------------------------- Just did some research and as of Windows 8 OEM copies are no longer tied to the motherboard, so no worries there. Windows 7 was the last Windows OS that had the MoBo lock on OEM versions.

Even then, there's a way around it. You're allowed to swap out if your MoBo dies, so there's still a way to transfer them.
