What would be the optimal relationship between performance, wattage, and price for a DDR4 CPU?
Hi
I was planning to install a computer using a 7800X3D CPU but had to stop due to the DDR5 RAM issue. Now I have a solid PSU and 32GB DDR4 2666 on both my current and older systems (i7 6700), and I’m trying to figure out which DDR4 CPU offers the best balance of performance, power usage, and cost. I’m not looking to stick with my existing motherboard, even with the current PSU, but I’m just seeking the top CPU choices for DDR4. Why? Because if I find one with a strong performance-to-cost ratio, I’d love to build a new machine around it. Right now, PSU, motherboard, GPU, and other parts aren’t the main focus.
In DDR5, the 7800X3D stands out with a price of around 350 euros, exceptional power efficiency, and likely the top CPU choice for gaming.
What DDR4 CPU would provide the best performance-to-watt-to-price ratio?
My current setup uses a decent PSU and 32GB DDR4 RAM on an i7 6700. I'm checking which DDR4 CPU would perform best in terms of performance, power consumption, and cost.

Include the age of the PSU along with its make and model. Also, the BIOS version on your motherboard at this time.
If your motherboard doesn't support overclocking RAM to DDR4-3200 MHz, you'll be limited to your current configuration. In 2026, the i7-6700 should still face challenges no matter what you adjust.
I'm not interested in keeping my existing motherboard, even with the current PSU. I just need the top CPU choices for DDR4. Why? Because if I discover one with excellent performance, price, and efficiency, I plan to build a new system around it. Right now, PSU, motherboard, GPU, etc., aren't priorities for me.
I intend to use it for gaming and software development.
The 7800X3D struggles with gaming due to its weak integrated GPU. It offers improved performance compared to Intel models, though it falls short against top-tier GPUs such as the 5080 and 5090 series. Without one of those, the 7800X3D could seem unnecessary. DDR5 CPUs provide significantly better power efficiency than their DDR4 predecessors. While both Intel and AMD match in this area, Raptor Lake generally outperforms AMD in performance on both gaming and workstation tasks. Both options remain competitive in price, making the current value for performance especially strong on devices like the Intel XX700.
