What type of cable is suitable for powering an HDD?
Hello,
I own a pre-built PC equipped with a Textorm TX650M+ V2 - 650W PSU but haven’t found any cables to power my SATA HDD. The PSU is two years old and was brand new at the time of purchase. I haven’t altered any original parts yet.
I’ve already used 6-pin SATA power cables, but they stopped the PC from turning on and I think they could damage the drives if connected. I assumed these cables would be standard, but it seems they might not be.
What should I look for to find a compatible cable for that PSU?
My setup includes:
- CPU: Intel Core i5-13600KF (3.5 GHz)
- Motherboard: GIGABYTE B760 DS3H AX DDR4
- Graphics card: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070
- Current SSD: Kingston NV2 1 To nVME
- Operating system: Windows 11 Pro
I plan to connect a Samsung Evo 870 1 To as well as a regular 2To HDD (though I don’t have the exact model). If possible, could you suggest a solution that works for just one of those connections?
Thank you.
Update your post with complete hardware details and operating system information. Provide the power supply specifications, including voltage, amperage, and age, along with its condition (original, build, refurbished, or used). List each connected peripheral device.
The website suggests that your Textorm TX650M+ V2 - 650W PSU should have been provided with the necessary SATA hard drive and SSD power connectors. The recommended connections are listed, including specific pinouts and types. It notes the PSU is semi-modular, allowing unused cables to remain unplugged for easier chassis management. The document advises verifying that the correct SATA power leads are present in the box. If they're missing, it warns this could be a serious issue. Connecting unknown cables without confirmation may trigger overload protection, potentially damaging the PSU and causing "magic smoke and lightning." It also clarifies that PCIe graphics cards typically require both +12V and +5V rails on designated pins, so the 6-pin connector should only supply +12V (with three yellow and three black wires) and omit the +5V rail (red wire). The text emphasizes not using the 6-pin connector again if it was previously used. Additional resources are provided for understanding PCIe cables and SATA power connections.
