I’m aiming to switch from an outdated gaming laptop to one with improved battery endurance, still maintaining strong performance and a decent GPU setup, all within a budget of 750 USD or less.
I’ve identified two strong contenders: the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 2 in 1 and the Asus Vivobook S 15 OLED.
The Lenovo appears to offer a slightly better CPU and GPU, plus its 2 in 1 design is attractive. The Asus, on the other hand, boasts a superior screen—120Hz 2.8k OLED versus the Lenovo’s 1080p 60 IPS—and promises significantly longer battery life.
Although OLEDs typically consume more power, the Asus’s 75 watt-hour rating is higher than the Lenovo’s 57 watt-hour, which could offset the drawbacks.
In terms of value, the Asus is priced at 749.99 USD, while the Lenovo is 699.99 USD, making them fairly close in cost.
For my long-term use—two to three years or more—I’m weighing performance, battery life, and future-proofing. I’m also considering alternatives if these options don’t fully meet my expectations.

You are asking fair questions.
However, do not forget to check with your college and/or the Department of your major.
They may already have applicable recommendations for hardware and software relevant to your major.
And may also have channels that include some student discounts.
Do leave gaming and recreation out of the requirements.
No problems with gaming per se other than playing games is not likely in the curriculum.
Consider that after a few minutes of gaming fun the laptop goes "belly-up" with the paper due tomorrow.
True: can happen with any app or hardware. Which is why we emphasize backups.
The risks are yours to take.
