held back using the 3700x for a while now (back story: i got my 1070 for free from my math teacher and he also gave me a ton of DDR4 RAM along with a 3700x, which apparently had stability issues even at stock clock), but now I'm thinking about using it in my system. This is the first time I've used an AMD in a build, so what should I expect from AMD?

Consider updating the BIOS to the latest version and using the RAM at its specified XMP profile. Observe the results. AM4 is a well-established platform, so you should encounter no issues now.

You'll need an appropriate motherboard to use the 3700X.

Someone mentioned you were using an H61 M.2 slot and wasn't too smart, while checking an MSI B450M.

Consider using the B550 with PCIe 4.0 support. It seems the B450 is still in use with version 3.

It's not exactly what I'm focused on, but I understand.

Beyond just data transfer rates, the X16 PCIe port also supports Gen 3 technology.

would taking the b450m route impact your performance? i'm wondering since i noticed it's significantly more affordable compared to the b550 mobos.

You might be fine with mid-range GPUs at the moment, though that may not hold for future models. The situation also hinges on whether the card uses an X16 or X8 bus. A PCIe 5.0 card running on an X8 bus in PCI 3.0 will likely lack sufficient memory bandwidth. SSDs could still reach up to 3000mbps sequential speeds if that's acceptable, so proceed. Other improvements like USB 10gbps and 20 gbps ports, as well as Wi-Fi 6 instead of 6E, would also be beneficial.
