What steps should be taken prior to fixing a PC?
Hi,
If my PC stops working and I can't log into Windows 10, when I take it to the repairman, how can I ensure they don’t get access to my data? Usually, the technician will need a few days to fix it and may ask for my login password. It seems they could view files in folders like Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc., and even open Chrome to check any accounts already logged in (such as Gmail or Facebook). What else might they see?
Q1. If I want to prepare before my PC becomes unreachable (e.g., can’t power on, black screen, stuck at the Windows logo), what steps should I take to protect my data?
Q2. Is it possible to log in to Windows without a password?
In short, I don’t understand the issue. During the day it fails these tasks: 1. PC can’t log in to Windows, 2. The PC must be taken to a repairman and the user must give the login password. What should be done beforehand each day so that even if the repairman logs in, there’s no risk? I also wonder if anyone regularly clears all browser accounts and logs out or does something unknown.
How sensitive is this info?
Suppose you think you have a way to prevent the repairman from accessing your data.
Would you believe it worked and that he in fact DID NOT access your data?
Or would you still be worried afterwards?
The only way to be sure beyond a doubt is to simply remove the drive before taking the PC to the repairman and ask him to evaluate the PC minus the drive. Don't give him the chance to look at your data.
You might then have to reinstall Windows after he returns it to you if the hardware is in good shape.
Does a PC require a hard disk (without any operating system) for a technician to perform testing or repairs? What occurs when a PC is turned on without a hard drive installed?
Can a technician diagnose or fix an issue if the PC lacks a hard disk built-in?
PCs are capable of running operating systems other than Windows.
They can start from drives that aren't traditional hard drives.
A skilled technician with the right tools can assess hardware without using Windows, though we don't know how well your technician is qualified.
Your hard drive and all your equipment might be fine. A fresh Windows setup could fix everything or not.
Are you unable or hesitant to reinstall Windows on your own?
Study everything thoroughly before taking action. Many people on this board have spent significant time on Duckets without prior experience in PC assembly and troubleshooting. They arrive later, only after their system fails. When they check, fans and LEDs start up, but that doesn’t indicate anything beyond the power rails functioning at 5v and 12v.
