It was confirmed that the left section of the cable is already attached to the chassis, so I will just remove the MB side.

Yes - no metal bar here, just the black and white plastic section and the cable. This seems to be the most probable situation. Got a suggestion from a friend to attempt pulling the white part toward the cable like this on the MB side:

Success!
It turned out the black part of the connector was a latch, so it had to be flipped up. It's plastic and ridiculously thin and fragile so it doesn't seem like a latch at all. Here it is in the open position:
I just had to pry it open from underneath with a plastic pry tool. It required almost no force.
And here is a picture of the the SSD installed and working:
