What software can help fix old videos' picture and sound?
Regardless of video format, accepting uncompressed video allows this method:
A portion or all of the content is stored as unreliable image files in a folder.
Pops and mold marks can be manually corrected by opening at least three images in an editor that supports layers and masks. This enables filling damaged areas with content from previous or next frames.
For the tools I’d recommend using:
Avidemux – split video segments into image files within a folder.
Gimp – edit individual frames.
XnView MP – viewer with preview to quickly find frame images with issues.
Audacity – audio editor that can edit audio, typically opening the video and extracting sound.
Avidemux again – encode the folder of images (frames) and audio (save as .wav).
