I'm evaluating a fresh build setup for my first real installation. The components include:
- i7-4790K CPU: [link]
- 980 TI graphics card: [link]
- Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard: [link]

I'm wondering if a top-tier air cooler will be enough to safely overclock the CPU, or should I consider watercooling? (I've heard that sometimes water cooling isn't needed.)
Should I focus on airflow in the case, or is the card's performance enough with good ventilation?
Also, how important is the motherboard choice? Will the Z97 Gaming 5 meet my overclocking goals if I have strong airflow elsewhere?
My main use will be gaming, aiming for top performance for the next few years. I want something that supports the latest games at maximum settings without noticeable drops in performance.

Additionally, as a beginner in overclocking, your advice would be greatly valued!

My main point is that a high-quality air cooler will significantly help you reach most of your goals (considering the chip's capabilities) for continuous overclocking during regular use. It makes smart investment money by allowing you to focus on other areas where performance improvements are more noticeable. A solid 1440p monitor paired with that card would work well, and you can always upgrade to a budget model for extra desktop or multitasking needs, though using two monitors can be frustrating. If you decide later to add another 980ti, I get it. For the board, pairing it with an air cooler is ideal, especially at the top-tier power delivery models where full board cooling becomes essential.

My main point is that a high-quality air cooler will significantly improve performance, especially for daily overclocking, offering substantial benefits within its price range. A solid 1440p monitor paired with such a card would work well. You can always upgrade to a more affordable model for additional desktop or multitasking needs, though gaming on two monitors can be frustrating. If you decide to add another 980ti, I understand. For the board, matching it with an air cooler is ideal. At the top end with excellent power delivery, cooling the entire board becomes feasible during intense overclocks—though these are rarely used continuously. The hybrid design also lets you push performance further, but it comes at a higher cost. The key consideration would be if you plan to use SLI, ensuring there’s enough room for the two 120mm fans.
